Thinking of Volunteering?

There are lots of opportunities for volunteers OF ANY AGE OR ABILITY. Some require an adult, including things like like making phone calls, sending emails, or driving a transport. However, there are lots of things kids can do to help, such as collecting recylcables, handing out literature or holding fundraisers (click here to see more ideas for kids).

Some things take very little time. For example, Tim McAmis, co-owner of Dee's Cafe in Elizabethton, and his friend, Potter, helped to give the bus a desperately needed bath. It took less than 90 minutes, but it made such a difference! (Many thanks to Tim and Potter...)

Download a list of other volunteer opportunities or contact Danika at etnspay-neuter@hotmail.com. Or scroll down the page for some more ideas... You are also welcome to join us each Wednesday at 10:00am (note new time!) at Dee's Cafe in downtown Elizabethton; Danika and a revolving group of volunteers meets there for breakfast each week.

With all the new Programs we are starting to offer, we are in serious need of some more volunteers. Lots of jobs are perfect for retirees, so if you love animals and want to make a difference in your community, come join us!

We need volunteers in Elizabethton AND especially in the Roan Mountain Area...We have a store in Building 12 at the Tri-Cities Flea Market that needs to be staffed on weekends. If you have items to donate, please contact us. We're also sharing office space with Avalon Computers in Elizabethton and need help staffing that too!

LOOK! A NO-COST WAY TO HELP US!!!

Save your recyclable metal and take it to Omni Source in Elizabethton or Johnson City and tell them to put it on our account. (East Tennessee Spay & Neuter, spelled out.) They pay for aluminum cans as well as many kinds of junk metal--things such as steel, cars, water heaters, aluminum siding & doors, etc. Turn that junk into cash to help the animals!

Save old cell phones, iPods, GPSs, digital cameras, and empty inkjet cartridges for  recycling. You (and your company, organization, church, etc.) can help us even more by buying your printer cartridges from us through our website:www.planetgreenrecycle.com/etnspayneuter

Ask anyone you know to save them too--at work, school, or church. The recycler asks us to keep the cartridges in their original packaging or separated in plastic bags--scratched cartridges are unusuable, so please do your best to avoid that. Thanks!

We receive funds for the recycled items, as well as 15% of each cartridge purchased! You can mail the empties yourself (prepaid labels are available on the website), or drop them off at the locations below.

Elizabethton-Carter County Library, 201 N. Sycamore St., Elizabethton
Security Federal Bank (Carmella Price), 632 E. Elk Ave., Elizabethton
Wal-Mart, Elizabethton (Service Desk & Electronics Dept.)
Sun Belt Credit, 324 E. Elk Ave., Elizabethton (542-0448)
If you know a business that would allow us to put a small collection box (about 12" square) at their location, we will list them on the website.

Fundraising: We can always use volunteers to help us raise money for our spay-neuter, pet food pantry, and veterinary clinic & care funds. There are lots of ways to help! Here are just a few:

1. Sign up sponsors - whether it's a one-time donation or a monthly scheduled amount, we're looking for donors who would like to sponsor a specific animal or contribute to the general funds for specific items and other expenses such as insurance, maintenance, phone, internet, etc.!
2. Locate in-kind donations - Services, items, GAS or gift cards, or contributions toward the following would be greatly appreciated:

  • copying/printing services,
  • office supplies, such as postage stamps, copy paper--white and colors--as well as laser toner cartridge Canon 104, large paper clips, pens, clipboards, display holders
  • Gas cards, gas cards, gas cards!
  • Travel carriers- small, medium, or large
  • Did I mention GAS CARDS?
  • Items we can sell or raffle off--hand-made or not
  • Purina or Pedigree pet foods
  • Equipment and supplies for our low-income veterinary clinic

3. Hold an event - Arrange and hold a yard sale, bake sale, craft sale, car wash, raffle, silent auction, Krispy Kreme donut sale, pet food drive, refreshment/snack stand, walkathon, or anything else you can think of! Every penny helps! (There's another one...a penny collection!)

4. Set up an online storefront - If you're an internet whiz, we could use a volunteer to help us set up an online store for pet-related products. These are generally template driven sites, but they do require some basic internet skills, a high-speed internet connection, and the ability to drive traffic to the site and monitor the activity.

Grant researcher/writer: We desperately need some volunteers to help us find grant money to support our work. Anyone can help with this. Keep your eyes and ears open, and look for notices in the newspaper or online. For example, recently there have been articles in the paper about Rachel Ray's pet charity contest and NASCAR driver Greg Biffle's support of spay & neuter.

You can search online, at the library, or through a professional grant researcher. Keep in mind that many grants are very specific in what they will support. We are looking for funds for our spay-neuter assistance programs, and all of the expenses associated with running ETSN.  In the future, we may be looking to open a local low-cost clinic.

If you have experience at grant writing and would like to help us out, we'd be so grateful! Sometimes a grant application is as simple as filling out a form; other times, it's a long, detailed process that can take hours and hours of work to complete. Generally, the more money involved, the more information they want. Any help we can get will save even more animals!

Public outreach events: We need volunteers to help us locate and sign-up for public events, and then to staff the ETSN tables at the events. This could involve the following:

  • Make contacts with local businesses, schools, churches, libraries, chambers of commerce, etc. to determine when and where events are happening where we could set up a table (preferably at no charge.)

  • Possible events include flea markets/yard sales, "Family Days" (e.g., Food City), Animal Blessing events, pet-related events, large public events such as Covered Bridge Days or First Friday, etc.

  • Sign up volunteers to staff the table

  • Gather necessary materials from ETSN (tables, tent, chairs, handouts, and any other required accessories)

  • Show up and be knowledgeable and talkative about what we do! And most importantly, take names and numbers of anyone who is interested in spay/neuter trips or volunteering.

TRANSPORT HELP

Currently, we do our trips from Carter County to Margaret B. Mitchell Spay-Neuter Clinic in Bristol, VA, which is located at Exit 10 on I-81 (about 40 minutes from Elizabethton). Families drop off their pets at 7am, and the bus leaves the Raceway parking lot by 7:15-7:20 am. Animals are kept overnight at MBM, and we pick them up at 8am the next morning. We return to Elizabethton usually around 9:30am. Ideally, we'd like to have two or three teams of driver, check-in, crowd control, and sign-ups. Then we could run two back-to-back trips per week.

We're starting a shuttle from Roan Mountain, and would like to add one from Johnson City--all we need are VOLUNTEERS!!!

Follow-up phone calls: Return calls from people who leave voicemail messages or gave us their names at public events. Explain what we do, answer questions, and respond appropriately. (You can get voicemail and return calls from any location.)

Transport sign-ups:  You'd help people fill out forms. Currently, sign ups are at Tractor Supply on Saturdays, 10:30am to noon. Ideally, at least one person doing sign-ups can drive the bus there and back.

Transport crowd control: Volunteer to help keep the pet owners organized at the bus on the morning of transport so that check-in goes smoothly. You'd need to be at the drop-off spot at 6:45am, and you'd be finished by 7:30am.

Transport check-in: You'd be responsible for checking pets onto the bus, verifying forms and payment, and helping to secure the crates in place for transport. The check-in volunteer also helps with unloading crates, and does check-in and payment at the clinic (with the help of a clinic staff person).

Transport Drivers: We could use volunteers for our spay-neuter runs --sometimes we use the Toyota van, but mostly we use the 24' purple bus. (No CDL required, but experience driving a large vehicle is.)  We also need drivers to do shuttle service from the Roan Mtn./Hampton areas--you'd pick up pets in the van and transfer them to the bus in Elizabethton. Drivers would also help secure crates for transport, and help unload at the clinic. (Staff at the clinic also helps, and handles all the large dogs.) Drivers of the "returning" leg would also help clean crates.

Literature Distribution: Similar to the public outreach events, literature distribution simply means handing out our business cards or information to the public. We have one volunteer who works a retail register, and slips a flier into every customer's bag. Another posts info on the bulletin board at work, and others hand out business cards at church, work, or school. Contact us for materials. (Even if you just tell people our website address, that helps to get the word out!)

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Sponsors Needed

"Purr"ple Bus or VAN Sponsorships We're looking for businesses or individuals to sponsor our services by placing a logo on the bus. Each sponsor gets a logo placed along the side of the bus. One van is used mostly in the Elizabethton area, the other will be mainly used in the Roan Mountain/Hampton areas.

Titanium Sponsorship (permanent & website link): $1000
Platinum sponsorship (3-year placement & website link): $500
Gold sponsorship (one-year placement):  $200
Silver sponsorship (6-month placement): $150
Bronze sponsorship (3-month placement): $75

This bus is an eye-catcher just sitting at Sloan's Automotive in Elizabethton, across from the Hardees drive-thru, and as it travels the area. The Roan Mtn. van looks similar. (Just for comparison, one month for a billboard in Elizabethton costs $600.) Contact Danika at 423-289-5548 for more info. You can also help us by donating via PayPal on our Home Page--be sure to put "bus" in the "note" section.

Sponsor a Pet:  Make a donation to help us reach as many animals as possible. Currently, transport and surgery costs from $55 to $75 per animal, depending on species and gender. To sponsor a spay-neuter, click on the following Donate button, or by regular mail at P.O. Box 2171, Elizabethton, TN 37644. You can also contact us directly at 423-289-5548 or at etnspay-neuter@hotmail.comWe are a nonprofit corporation; all donations are tax deductible.

TRAVEL CRATES NEEDED!!!

We need to supply the Roan Mtn. Critter Van with travel crates, so if you have one to donate, we'd sure appreciate it. While new is great, flea market or yard sale finds are fine too...as long as they are in good condition. In other words, one that you'd feel comfortable putting your own precious pet in!
